Türkiye has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening strategic ties with Bangladesh through enhanced cooperation in trade, defense, humanitarian assistance, and regional diplomacy, while also expressing continued support for Dhaka’s efforts on the Rohingya crisis and global peace initiatives.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Dhaka alongside Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara is determined to elevate the longstanding bilateral relationship to a stronger, broader, and more forward-looking partnership.

Congratulating Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Fidan described the achievement as a reflection of the international community’s confidence and respect for Bangladesh. He expressed confidence that Rahman’s diplomatic experience and Bangladesh’s active engagement at the UN would contribute to a successful tenure.

The Turkish foreign minister said the two sides held extensive discussions on bilateral cooperation, coordination within international organizations, and key regional and global developments.

On economic relations, Fidan noted that both countries are working to increase bilateral trade from the current US$1.3 billion to US$2 billion. He also identified the defense industry as a promising sector for future collaboration.

During the visit, Bangladesh and Türkiye signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Describing Bangladesh as a “strong voice of the Global South,” Fidan said the country plays a strategically important role in maintaining peace, stability, and security in South Asia.

Addressing the Rohingya crisis, he praised Bangladesh for hosting more than 1.1 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas, calling it a historic humanitarian contribution. He reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to keeping the issue on the international agenda and supporting the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Fidan also announced plans to visit Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and observe humanitarian operations carried out by several Turkish organizations, including TIKA, AFAD, the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Diyanet Foundation.

Commenting on regional and global security challenges, he warned that growing conflicts and instability are affecting international dynamics and increasing the risk of broader regional confrontations. He welcomed progress in Iran–US negotiations and expressed hope for lasting peace and stability.

Regarding Gaza, Fidan called on the international community to take a unified stance to end the conflict and restore peace, emphasizing that stopping violence should remain a global priority.

He concluded by saying that new initiatives and joint projects between Bangladesh and Türkiye would further strengthen bilateral relations and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity both in South Asia and beyond.
