State Minister for Youth and Sports, Md. Aminul Haque has announced plans to establish a modern sports complex in Chattogram as part of the government's broader efforts to build a healthy, talented, and sports-friendly generation.

Speaking at an exchange meeting with officials of divisional and district sports associations at the Chattogram Circuit House Conference Hall on Friday, the minister said the government is implementing a range of initiatives to keep young people away from drug abuse and excessive dependence on digital devices while encouraging participation in sports.

He noted that nearly 300 national-level athletes have already received sports allowances and sports cards aimed at ensuring financial and social security. After June, another 500 athletes will be brought under the program. The sports cards provide access to healthcare, insurance coverage, and social protection benefits.

The minister expressed concern over the growing use of mobile phones and digital devices among children and teenagers, describing sports as one of the most effective tools for promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, and positive social values.

Highlighting youth development initiatives, Aminul Haque said the government's “Notun Kuri Sports” program is creating opportunities for boys and girls aged 12 to 14 to participate equally in competitive sports, helping identify and nurture emerging talent from across the country.

Emphasizing sports diplomacy, he said Bangladesh is working to strengthen international sporting partnerships and create greater opportunities for local athletes abroad. A recently signed memorandum of understanding with Turkey is expected to enhance sports and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Md. Ziauddin and moderated by Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia. Senior government officials and sports organizers also attended the event.

Later in the day, the state minister inaugurated the Shaheed Zia Memorial Open Gold Cup Football Tournament 2026 at Shaheed Shahjahan Field in Chattogram city.
