A Bangladeshi businessman has offered a helping hand to 18-year-old German tourist Krill Lander, who was left distressed after losing his laptop and camera while travelling in Bangladesh.
Businessman Mukti Mahmud gifted the young tourist a MacBook at Hazaribagh Police Station in Dhaka on Saturday evening, in the presence of police officers.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Wednesday at Natore Railway Station. Krill reportedly left his bag containing a laptop and camera with a man who claimed to be a railway official while he went to withdraw money. When he returned, the man was gone. Krill later discovered that the individual was not a railway employee and reported the incident to Natore Sadar Police Station.
A video showing Krill crying at the police station subsequently circulated on social media. He returned to Dhaka on Thursday.
After watching the video, Mukti Mahmud was deeply moved and decided to help the young tourist, recalling his own son. He contacted Krill through a person named Shawon and arranged to gift him a MacBook.
Mukti, who lives in Dhaka’s Jigatola area, is a senior manager in the human resources department of Anjuman Designers Limited. He said the theft of a foreign tourist’s belongings in Bangladesh was embarrassing for the country. As his own son also studies abroad, he felt compelled to support Krill. He hopes the young visitor will leave Bangladesh with some positive memories.
Krill expressed his gratitude for the new MacBook and said it would allow him to resume his work.
Hazaribagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain said Krill had purchased his laptop with money earned through part-time work alongside his studies. He described the loss as unfortunate and welcomed the initiative taken by the Bangladeshi businessman.
Police said CCTV footage from Natore Railway Station showed a man leaving with Krill’s laptop and camera bag. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspect and recover the stolen belongings.
