Bangladesh to Recruit 14,000 Police Personnel, Including 4,000 Sub-Inspectors

The government has decided to recruit 14,000 new personnel for Bangladesh Police, including 4,000 sub-inspectors (SIs) and 10,000 constables. Police regulations have been amended to allow all 4,000 SI positions to be filled through direct recruitment, rather than the usual combination of direct recruitment and departmental promotion. The government aims to complete the recruitment process by December this year.
The proposal was approved at a meeting of the Secretaries’ Committee on Administrative Development at the Secretariat on Wednesday (October 28).
Under the existing police regulations, 50 percent of SI positions are filled through departmental promotion, while the remaining 50 percent are filled through direct recruitment. Under the revised arrangement, however, all 4,000 new SI positions will be filled through direct recruitment.
Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, said the new posts had been created with approval from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Public Administration to help restore and strengthen law and order amid the country’s changing circumstances.
He said the decision to recruit all 4,000 sub-inspectors directly would apply on a one-time basis for now. However, the government could take similar decisions in the future if necessary.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the initiative to restructure the police force takes into account allegations of political influence involving some personnel recruited during the previous Awami League government, the lack of expected improvement in law and order over the past eight months, and concerns over the leaking of sensitive information.
The decision to fill all SI posts through direct recruitment could, however, cause frustration among serving police personnel who are awaiting departmental promotions, observers believe.
Meanwhile, sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs said the government had decided to recruit between 400 and 500 assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) to fill vacancies in the police cadre through the 52nd special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination.
Authorities are also considering a modest reduction in the duration of basic training for the newly recruited officers. They have said the selection process will prioritise transparency and include rigorous intelligence-based background checks.
