Garment factory workers blocked the Dhaka–Tangail Highway in Gazipur on Monday, November 2, demanding higher wages and benefits. The blockade triggered severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway, leaving commuters, long-distance passengers and transport operators facing significant delays.
Workers began demonstrating on the highway on Monday morning. They subsequently blocked the road, disrupting traffic and causing long queues of vehicles.
To maintain law and order and bring the situation under control, additional police personnel were deployed at the scene. Ten platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were also deployed.
The protesting workers said they would continue their movement until their demands for increased wages and benefits were met. Meanwhile, the administration has been holding discussions with the workers in an effort to restore normal traffic and ease tensions.
The blockade has caused considerable hardship for people travelling to various destinations, including long-distance bus passengers. Traffic on both sides of the highway remains disrupted, resulting in delays for commuters and transport operators.
