Information and Broadcasting Minister Jahir Uddin Swapan has said that in the current era of artificial intelligence and advanced technology, it is not enough to make the younger generation technologically skilled; they must also be educated in moral values.

He said that without a strong moral foundation, it would not be possible to ensure the proper use of talent and technology among young people. Therefore, equal importance should be given to moral education alongside digital literacy.

The minister made the remarks on Sunday while addressing a national seminar and scholarship distribution programme titled “The Role of Moral Education in Implementing the Philosophy of ‘Bangladesh First’,” organised by Bangladesh Student Welfare Trust at the Daffodil Tower auditorium in the capital.

Jahir Uddin Swapan said the world is rapidly moving toward a digital system where everything from personal communication to business activities now depends heavily on digital platforms. However, many state structures are still struggling to keep pace with this rapid transformation.

He said the country must quickly transform into a modern, technology-driven state. At the same time, greater emphasis should be placed on promoting positive and value-based content on social media platforms to help shape the moral mindset of young people.

Referring to the political and social realities, the minister said that when a statesman or responsible individual lacks moral standards, the consequences are never positive.

He further said that human beings naturally possess certain negative tendencies, which can only be controlled through the cultivation of morality and cultural values from an early age. Moral education should therefore be properly reflected in the education system and curriculum so that students can grow up with humanity, integrity and a positive mindset.

The Information Minister said there was a time in the country when constructive initiatives and important social issues could not be openly discussed. However, the situation has now changed, creating an environment for free discussion and expression. He urged everyone to utilise this opportunity to help build a moral and humane society.

The programme was chaired by Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Student Welfare Trust Professor Dr. Abdul Latif Masum. State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque spoke as a special guest.

Among others, Chairman of Bangladesh Student Welfare Trust and former adviser to the caretaker government Professor Md. Moinuddin Khan and Chairman of Daffodil International University Dr. Md. Sabur Khan also addressed the event.

At the end of the seminar, the minister distributed scholarship cheques among meritorious students.
