Afzal Hossain Honored with ‘Srijonkola Gunijon Sammanona 2026’

Tagore University of Creative Arts (TUCA) has conferred the ‘Srijonkola Gunijon Sommanona 2026’ on renowned actor, director, writer, artist and advertising filmmaker Afzal Hossain in recognition of his contributions to the creative arts.

The programme was chaired by Robin Khan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TUCA.  The special guests were Lieutenant General Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardi (Retd), Bir Bikrom; Farzana Rashid Brownia, Founder and Chairman of Shornokishore Network Foundation (SKNF); and Monira Parveen, Assistant Professor at the Department of Dance, University of Dhaka. Dr. Md. Rafiul Islam, Honorary Academic Adviser to the university and Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Dhaka, delivered the welcome address. Heads of various departments, faculty members, officials, staff, students, and invited guests of the university were also present.

During the award segment, Abdur Razzak, lecturer at the Department of Theatre, presented a brief account of Afzal Hossain’s life and career, while Nishat Tabassum, lecturer at the Department of Music, read out the citation. The programme was conducted by Niger Sultana, Lecturer and Coordinator of the Department of Business Administration.

Students from the departments of Theatre, Music, Dance and Fashion Design took part in the cultural programme, which featured theatre, group songs, dance and a fashion show. Kaniz Khandaker Mitu, lecturer at the Department of Music, performed a Lalon song.

After receiving the Sommanona, Afzal Hossain spoke about his creative journey and shared experiences from his career. He later took part in an interactive session with students and answered their questions.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TUCA, Mr Robin Khan, said, Afzal Hossain is a versatile creative figure whose work has entertained audiences, encouraged reflection, and offered new ways of looking at art and beauty. He is not merely an actor, filmmaker, or artist to us; he is one of the most versatile creative figures of our time. His work has entertained us, made us think, encouraged us to question, and inspired us to see beauty from new perspectives.

About the ‘Srijonkola Gunijon Sommanona’ The ‘‘Srijonkola Gunijon Sommanona’ was introduced by Tagore University of Creative Arts in 2026 to recognise individuals who have made significant contributions to art, culture and creative practice.

The award also seeks to introduce the work, artistic vision and creative legacy of distinguished cultural figures to younger generations.
