A football supporter has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after throwing a stadium seat that struck and injured a player from his own team, in a case that has reignited debate over crowd violence and safety in football grounds.
The incident occurred during a domestic league match when unrest broke out among supporters following a heated moment in the game. Amid the chaos, the fan tore a plastic seat from the stand and hurled it onto the pitch. The projectile struck one of the team’s players, causing injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Court proceedings revealed that the injured player was not involved in any confrontation and was attempting to calm the situation when he was hit. Prosecutors described the act as reckless and dangerous, emphasising that the consequences could have been fatal.
The defendant pleaded guilty to violent disorder and causing grievous bodily harm. In sentencing, the judge said the attack represented a “serious breach of trust” and highlighted the responsibility of fans to ensure stadiums remain safe environments for players, officials, and other spectators.
The court also imposed a lengthy football banning order, preventing the offender from attending matches for several years following his release. Authorities stressed that such measures are necessary to deter future incidents of fan violence.
Football governing bodies and clubs have condemned the attack, reiterating zero tolerance for violence in stadiums. The injured player has since recovered but was sidelined for several weeks, impacting his team’s performance.
The case has prompted renewed calls for stricter enforcement of stadium safety regulations and harsher penalties for supporters who engage in violent or disorderly conduct.
