The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced a significant change in its leadership structure, electing Howrah MLA Arup Roy as the party’s new chairman.

The decision was made during a special organizational meeting held on Monday (June 22) at a hotel in New Town, Kolkata. The meeting was attended by around 60 legislators and at least 70 councillors from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The closed-door session was led by Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay. During the meeting, he highlighted organizational challenges within the party and noted that, according to the party constitution, the All India Executive Committee is required to be reconstituted every three years. However, no new committee had been formed since 2022.

Following discussions on organizational reforms, party members approved Arup Roy’s appointment as chairman through a voice vote.

The meeting also finalized a new leadership structure. Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Rathin Ghosh, and Sabina Yasmin were appointed as vice-chairpersons. Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay, Javed Khan, and Sandipan Saha were named general secretaries.

Akhruzzaman Ansari was appointed treasurer, while the party also decided to appoint a special auditor to review its previous financial activities.

Party leaders described the restructuring as an effort to strengthen organizational efficiency and improve internal governance within the Trinamool Congress.
