Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) in a case filed over alleged disorder, obstruction of government work and assault at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

He was arrested from his residence in the Cantonment area of Dhaka on Friday (October 2). DB Additional Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest.

Earlier on Friday, airport security officer Mohammad Shahriar Alam Sajib filed a case against Akhtaruzzaman with Airport Police Station. The case includes allegations of obstructing government work, assault, criminal force, intentional insult and intimidation.

According to the case statement, passengers arriving from Madinah on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 faced delays in collecting their luggage amid heavy passenger pressure and a shortage of trolleys at baggage belt No. 8 on Thursday. The airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, went to the area to help control the situation.

The case statement alleges that Akhtaruzzaman behaved aggressively toward the executive director and threatened him. It also alleges that he verbally abused and physically assaulted security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin after security personnel objected to mobile-phone recording in the restricted KPI area.

The complaint further alleges damage to Zamzam water bottles belonging to passengers and aggressive behaviour toward a Biman representative. Police said the incident would be investigated using CCTV footage, witness statements and other evidence.
