Election symbols will be allotted to the candidates contesting the Thakurgaon-1 by-election on Thursday (October 8), officially paving the way for their election campaigns.
Following the end of the withdrawal deadline on Wednesday, five candidates from five political parties remain in the race. They are BNP’s Mirza Faisal Amin, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Md Delwar Hossain, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan’s Md Abdul Alim Nizami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Md Khademul Islam and Bangladesh Congress candidate Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruk.
BNP’s district vice-president Md Obaidullah Masud, who had initially submitted his nomination papers as a BNP candidate, withdrew his candidacy following a party decision. As a result, Mirza Faisal Amin is now the BNP’s sole candidate in the constituency. The party has also requested the Election Commission to allot him the BNP’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of paddy.
According to the election schedule, voting will take place on October 29 from 8am to 4pm without interruption.
The Election Commission said Thakurgaon-1 had 507,203 registered voters during the 13th parliamentary election. After the addition of new voters, the current electorate has increased to 515,525.
The seat became vacant after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was elected from Thakurgaon-1 in the 13th parliamentary election, assumed office as president. The Election Commission subsequently announced the by-election schedule.
