Dhaka court has sent 14 people to jail after the end of their remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over alleged anti-state activities and preparations for sabotage in Uttara.

The order was issued on Friday (October 2) by Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir following a petition by the investigating officer. Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain produced the accused before the court after completion of their remand and sought their detention in jail.

Earlier on Tuesday, the court granted three days’ remand for the 14 accused, while a female accused in the same case was placed on one day’s remand. On Friday, the court also rejected bail petitions filed on behalf of 11 of the accused.

According to the investigating officer’s petition, the accused provided important information during interrogation and the investigation remains ongoing. The prosecution argued that they should remain in custody until the information is verified and the investigation is completed.

The 14 were arrested on Monday during a police raid on the residence of former lawmaker Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon in Sector 7 of Uttara. Police said they recovered 20 pages containing the names and biographical details of 20 people seeking positions in the Kakchira Union unit of Bangladesh Awami Swechhasebak League in Barguna’s Patharghata.

Police also said the documents contained the logos of the Awami League and Swechhasebak League, photographs of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the slogans “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” An Anti-Terrorism Act case was subsequently filed with Uttara West Police Station.
