New Zealand’s opening batsmen delivered one of the most remarkable performances in recent Test cricket history as they rewrote multiple records during the third and final match of the series against the West Indies.
In a dominant display at Bay Oval, captain Tom Latham and fellow opener Devon Conway put on a massive 323-run opening partnership in the first innings, setting the tone for a commanding team total after New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat.
Conway was unbeaten on a superb 227 runs, while Latham contributed a solid 137, helping the hosts declare on 575‑8. The pair’s opening stand was not only massive in its own right but marked one of the highest opening partnerships for New Zealand in Test cricket.
The batsmen continued their stellar form in the second innings as New Zealand set the West Indies a formidable target of 462 runs for victory.
In a rare and historic feat, both Latham and Conway scored centuries in each innings of the match, becoming the first opening pair in Test cricket history to achieve this milestone. Latham recorded 101 in the second innings, and Conway reached exactly 100, further cementing their place in the record books.
Combined across both innings, the opening pair amassed 515 runs, a tally that stands among the most prolific by any opening duo in a Test match. Additionally, Conway’s performance was particularly notable as he became only the tenth batter in Test history to score a double century and a century in the same match, joining an elite list of cricket greats.
The West Indies battled in response to New Zealand’s imposing total, but found themselves struggling against the massive target laid out by the hosts. New Zealand’s record-breaking efforts have put them in a commanding position to seal the series, showcasing batting depth and dominant form.
