Cricketers Remain Firm on Resignation Demand-Fears of BPL and Domestic Cricket Disruption

Bangladesh cricket has entered a fresh phase of tension following a show-cause notice issued by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to its director and chairman of the finance committee, M. Nazmul Islam.
The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has remained firm on its demand for his resignation and warned that, if the demand is not met within the stipulated time, players may boycott matches and halt all cricketing activities.
On Thursday morning (15 January 2026), the BCB announced through a press release that Nazmul Islam had been served a show-cause notice and asked to submit a written explanation within 48 hours.
However, the cricketers clarified that the issuance of a notice does not address their core demand and reiterated that they want Nazmul Islam to step down from his position.
The controversy began after comments made by Nazmul Islam regarding the board’s expenditure on national team players, in which he questioned accountability in relation to performance.
Cricketers viewed the remarks as disrespectful and damaging to the cricketing environment, prompting an organised response from players across formats.
The impact of the standoff was immediately felt in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Uncertainty loomed over scheduled matches on Thursday afternoon, with confusion surrounding team participation and logistics.
Close to match time, players indicated they might hold a press briefing to clarify their stance. Concerns also spread to other domestic competitions, as players signalled that no tournament would be immune if their demand was ignored.
In response, several BCB directors reportedly reached out to player representatives in an attempt to defuse the situation and find a middle ground. Despite these efforts, the players maintained that resignation is the only acceptable resolution.
Unless a settlement is reached at the highest level of the board, the ongoing impasse could significantly disrupt the BPL and upcoming domestic fixtures.
