Lionel Messi played his final match for Argentina in a 3-0 victory over Benin, but the result was overshadowed by an emotional farewell at Monumental Stadium. Standing before nearly 85,000 supporters with a microphone in hand, Messi repeatedly struggled to hold back his emotions as he reflected on more than two decades with the national team.
Messi began by expressing gratitude to his father before looking back on his extraordinary international journey. He recalled the highs and lows, the victories, disappointments, criticism and difficult periods he experienced while wearing the Argentina shirt.
The Argentine icon described representing his country for more than 20 years as an enormous honour. He also stressed that even during the toughest periods, he never stopped fighting or giving everything for the team.
Messi admitted that walking away from international football would be extremely difficult. Playing for Argentina, he said, had been one of the most beautiful experiences of his life. However, after such a long journey, he believes this is the right moment to step away.
The 2022 World Cup triumph naturally featured prominently in his farewell speech. Messi recalled returning to Argentina after winning the trophy and playing again in front of the home supporters as one of the happiest moments of his career. He said he still becomes emotional when watching videos of that celebration.
He also thanked the teammates who shared his journey and helped him fulfil his childhood dreams. Alongside the World Cup, Messi highlighted Argentina’s Copa América and Finalissima triumphs and the collective effort behind those achievements.
The 39-year-old also paid tribute to Argentina’s supporters. He recalled playing in packed stadiums across the country and said the fans’ passion made the national team feel at home wherever they played.
But standing in the same stadium where he once celebrated Argentina’s World Cup triumph, Messi now faced the sadness of saying goodbye. He described the moment as one of the saddest days of his career.
Although he will no longer represent Argentina on the pitch, Messi said he intends to remain close to the team and support the next generation from the stands. He urged the squad to remain united, warning that difficult periods will inevitably come.
According to Messi, Argentina are strongest when they stand together. He called on the team to maintain unity and support one another when facing future challenges.
Toward the end of his speech, Messi could no longer hide his emotions. With his voice breaking, he said, “I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to leave this field.”
He concluded by thanking the supporters and expressing his pride in being Argentine. Messi said he would miss them deeply and ended his farewell with a message of love and gratitude to everyone who had shared his journey.
