Two siblings have died in Dhaka after falling seriously ill, reportedly following the consumption of food. The deceased were identified as Afrida Chowdhury, aged 10, and her one-year-old brother Ilham Chowdhury. The incident took place in the Moghbazar–Hatirjheel area of the capital.
According to family members, several members of the household became unwell after eating the same food. As the children’s condition deteriorated, they were rushed to separate hospitals for treatment. Despite medical efforts, both children died while undergoing treatment. Their parents also fell ill after eating the same food, but later recovered following treatment.
Police said that yesterday, around noon, one body was recovered from the Moghbazar Community Hospital, while the other was recovered from the Rashmoni Hospital. The bodies were subsequently sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Preliminary findings suggest that the deaths may have been caused by food poisoning. However, it is not yet confirmed whether the food was prepared at home or brought from outside. The exact cause of death will be determined after autopsy reports and laboratory test results are received.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area. Police have launched an investigation and stated that further details will be disclosed once forensic examinations are completed.
