After a long wait of nearly 17 years in exile, Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is scheduled to return to Bangladesh tomorrow, 25 December 2025.

His homecoming marks the end of an extended period abroad that began in 2008, and is being described by supporters as a historic and emotionally significant moment for both the party and its followers.

Tarique Rahman’s anticipated arrival is planned for the morning at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where security measures have been intensified to ensure a smooth and safe reception. The government has coordinated security in consultation with BNP leaders, with double-layer security cordons placed from the airport to key points along his route. Authorities have also temporarily restricted access at the airport to manage crowds and ensure orderly operations.

The BNP has said it is preparing a grand reception for Tarique Rahman, expecting a large turnout of party cadres and supporters in Dhaka and beyond. Party leaders say his return is not only a long-awaited personal homecoming but also a critical moment for the political landscape ahead of upcoming national elections scheduled for 12 February 2026.

Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, served for many years as the de facto leader of BNP from abroad. His return is expected to energize the party’s base and play a central role in its political strategy as the country approaches a pivotal election year.

In addition to his political agenda, reports indicate that Tarique Rahman may visit his mother, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently hospitalized, shortly after his arrival.
