In a humanitarian gesture at the Bangladesh–India border, two Bangladeshi sisters were given the opportunity to see their deceased mother one last time at the Bhomra border zero point in Satkhira.

The arrangement was jointly facilitated by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday (February 11) at noon. The meeting took place at the zero line between the two countries under tight supervision from both border forces.

According to local sources, Zarina Khatun (98), wife of Gafur Mondal of Ghojadanga village under Basirhat subdivision in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India, died on Tuesday night due to old age-related complications. Her two daughters, Shirina Khatun and Aleya Khatun, are married and reside in Harddaha Bharukhali village under Satkhira Sadar upazila in Bangladesh.

After receiving news of their mother’s death, the sisters applied to the BGB seeking permission to see her. Simultaneously, relatives in India submitted a request to the BSF for a cross-border humanitarian arrangement.

Considering the emotional circumstances, BGB’s Satkhira 33 Battalion Bhomra Border Outpost and the Ghojadanga BSF camp coordinated efforts to bring the body to the zero point. Under the supervision of both forces, members of the two families were allowed a limited period to meet and offer their final respects.

Following the brief meeting, the body was handed back to Indian authorities for funeral arrangements.

The incident highlights cross-border humanitarian cooperation between Bangladesh and India in sensitive family matters along the frontier.
