The Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) has stated that the decision regarding the detention of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Thakurgaon lies with the authorities who carried out the arrest, clarifying that the Election Commission itself does not directly intervene in law-enforcement matters.

Responding to questions from reporters, the EC Secretary explained that if any candidate or political leader is detained during the election period, the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the law-enforcement agency responsible for the arrest.

He added that the Commission’s role is limited to ensuring a level playing field and the smooth conduct of elections, while criminal or security-related actions are handled independently by police or other agencies.

The official further noted that the Election Commission expects all enforcement actions during the election period to comply with existing laws and regulations. If any party believes that an arrest or detention affects the fairness of the electoral process, they may submit a formal complaint to the Commission for review.

The detention of the Jamaat leader in Thakurgaon has drawn political attention in the district, especially given the ongoing election process. However, the EC Secretary emphasized that administrative or legal decisions concerning the detainee will be made by the competent authorities based on applicable legal procedures.

The Election Commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining neutrality and upholding democratic standards during the electoral period.
