Retired Supreme Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Dr Jahangir Alam Khan and Dr Md Sajjad Hossain Bhuiyan have also been appointed as commissioners as part of the reconstitution of the anti-graft body.

The appointments were confirmed through a gazette notification signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani on Monday (August 17).

According to the notification, the appointments were made under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

Under the existing rules, the ACC chairman will receive the salary, allowances, status and other benefits equivalent to those of a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The two commissioners will enjoy benefits and status equivalent to judges of the High Court Division.

On March 3 this year, then ACC Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen and commissioners Mia Mohammad Ali Akbar Azizi and Brigadier General (retd) Hafiz Ahsan Farid resigned simultaneously. Since then, the country’s key anti-corruption institution had been operating without a commission.

The appointment of the new chairman and two commissioners has now restored a full-fledged commission, paving the way for the ACC to resume its core activities with renewed momentum.
