Presidential Election Nomination Papers to Be Scrutinised Today Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmad

Nomination papers of BNP and its like-minded parties’ candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 11-party alliance candidate Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will be scrutinised today, Sunday (August 16), for the upcoming presidential election.

Election Commission (EC) officials confirmed the matter.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the Chief Election Commissioner, acting as the election officer, will begin scrutinising the nomination papers at the Election Commission building at 10am. The process will continue until the scrutiny is completed.

According to the EC, a total of three nomination papers have been submitted. Two nomination papers were submitted in favour of Oli Ahmed, while one was submitted for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

A representative from the Parliament Secretariat will also be present during the scrutiny process.

According to the election schedule, the deadline for withdrawing candidacies is 4pm on August 18. The 23rd presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 20.

The country’s 22nd president resigned on July 24, citing illness. Following the vacancy, the Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule on August 6.

The election will mark the first presidential vote in Bangladesh since 1991.
