Total 174 Bangladeshi nationals who had been detained in Libya for an extended period have returned home. They arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 6:00 am on Tuesday (August 18) on Burak Air flight UZ-222 from Libya.

Among those repatriated were three women, one child and 15 people who were reportedly ill.

The Bangladesh Embassy, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), facilitated their safe and humanitarian repatriation from the Ganfuda Detention Center in Benghazi.

According to reports, the Bangladeshis had attempted to reach Europe through irregular routes, crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of better economic opportunities. They were rescued or detained during their sea journey and subsequently held at the Ganfuda Detention Center in Libya, where they reportedly spent a prolonged period in harsh and inhumane conditions.
