least 23 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a series of suspected suicide bomb attacks in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Monday night during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, police and emergency officials confirmed. The explosions struck several crowded locations, including the Post Office area, the Monday Market, and near the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State, causing widespread chaos and devastation across the city. Preliminary investigations by authorities indicate that suspected suicide bombers carried out the coordinated blasts, although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. Security officials suspect involvement by Islamist extremist groups, including Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have been active in the region for nearly two decades and have previously targeted civilian and military sites. The bombings shattered a period of relative calm in Maiduguri, which has remained a symbolic and strategic city throughout the long-running insurgency that has displaced millions and claimed tens of thousands of lives. In response to the violence, President Bola Tinubu condemned the attacks as acts of terror and ordered senior security leadership to relocate to Maiduguri to take direct control of the situation, while patrols and emergency efforts have been intensified to stabilize the city and prevent further incidents. Investigations into the bombings are ongoing as authorities work to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
