Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday after the Shawwal moon was not sighted in the country’s sky on Thursday evening.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The meeting was chaired by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain. After reviewing reports from district administrations, the head office and regional offices of the Islamic Foundation, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO), the committee confirmed that no credible sighting of the Shawwal moon had been reported anywhere in the country.

Based on this, it was decided that the month of Shawwal will begin on Saturday, and Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on the same day across Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, a clear division has emerged in the Muslim world regarding the celebration of Eid this year. Muslims in different countries are observing Eid over three consecutive days. On Thursday, Eid-ul-Fitr was already celebrated in Afghanistan, Niger, and Mali.

In Bangladesh, a small village in Chandpur also marked Eid in alignment with those countries. However, attendance at the Eid congregation in that village was notably low, with only seven worshippers participating in the prayer.
