A Bangladeshi national was shot dead allegedly by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar on Sunday (August 9).

The deceased was identified as Tara Mia, son of Abdul Malek, from the Murai Chhara Basti area of Kulaura upazila.

According to local residents, a group of four to five suspected smugglers crossed illegally into Indian territory through the Alinagar border area of Prithimpasha Union in the early hours of the day. The group reportedly crossed about 500 yards beyond border pillar No. 1845/63-S in the Maguruli area, allegedly with the assistance of Indian smugglers, to bring in contraband goods.

Locals said the BSF opened fire during a confrontation with the group, leaving Tara Mia dead at the scene.

Lt Col Sarkar Asif Mahmud, commanding officer of BGB 46 Battalion in Sreemangal, said the border force is taking necessary steps to gather further information about the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are being looked into by the relevant authorities.
