People facing financial hardship, medical expenses, land-related disputes, social problems and unpaid dues are regularly turning to the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s office for help. Every Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan holds a public hearing where citizens can directly present their grievances and seek administrative assistance.

At a recent weekly hearing, more than 50 people appeared before the district administration with a wide range of complaints and requests. Issues included payment of compensation for acquired land, maternity allowances, medical and financial assistance, road problems, support for fire-affected people and recovery of unpaid wages from factories.

Many of those attending the hearing were elderly, financially distressed or otherwise vulnerable. The district administration listened to their complaints and took steps on matters that could be addressed immediately, while referring other cases to the relevant government offices.

One of the recent cases involved Al-Amin Bhuiyan, a physically challenged man who had been engaged in begging since childhood because of poverty. He told the DC that he wanted to leave begging and start a small business but lacked the necessary capital. After hearing his request, the district administration provided financial assistance to help him start the business and assured him of further support.

Earlier, an elderly couple also appeared at the public hearing alleging that their son had failed to provide them with necessary support and had subjected them to physical abuse. The district administration took steps to facilitate legal assistance in response to their complaint.

According to DC Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, the weekly public hearing is held every Wednesday in line with instructions from the ministry. He said many of the people who come to the hearing are elderly and vulnerable, and the administration tries to resolve issues within its capacity.

For medical and financial assistance, the district administration is working with the Department of Social Services, the Department of Women Affairs, the Disability Welfare Trust and the District Relief and Rehabilitation Office so that eligible people can receive government support.

The weekly hearing provides citizens with a direct channel to communicate their problems to the district administration. Complaints involving land, healthcare, financial hardship, social protection and local development can be raised before the administration through the platform.

The official Gazipur district portal also highlights the administration’s efforts to make public services more accessible through digital platforms and to receive citizens’ complaints, opinions and suggestions.

Regular and effective public hearings can strengthen direct communication between field administration and citizens while helping relevant government services and assistance reach eligible beneficiaries more efficiently.
