Bangladesh Signs Deal with Boeing to Buy 11 New Aircraft

The government has signed an agreement with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to purchase 11 new aircraft as part of efforts to expand Bangladesh’s aviation sector, Foreign Minister Humayun Kabir said.

He made the disclosure at a press conference held at the lobby of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York on Wednesday evening (September 23, local time).

Humayun Kabir said a significant agreement was signed with Boeing on Tuesday, under which Biman Bangladesh Airlines will purchase 11 additional Boeing aircraft.

Senior US government officials attended the signing ceremony, including US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Under Secretary of Commerce William Kimmitt, and Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur.

The foreign minister said the decision to purchase the new aircraft was made in view of the need to expand Bangladesh’s aviation sector. He noted that Bangladesh has a long-standing commercial relationship with Boeing, while discussions with Airbus could also take place in the future depending on the country’s requirements.

“Bangladesh’s aviation sector is expanding, and there are plans to launch new routes. That is why additional aircraft are needed,” he said, adding that aircraft purchases would be made based on the country’s actual demand.

He also said a Boeing delegation later paid a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister.

The press conference was attended by Foreign Minister Shama Obaid, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin, Press Secretary Saleh Shibli, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, and other members of the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.
