A Dhaka court has sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam to four years in prison in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional six months in prison.
Divisional Special Judge B. M. Tariqul Kabir delivered the verdict on Thursday, October 15. The court also ordered the confiscation of assets worth Tk 3.181 million, deemed to have been illegally acquired, in favour of the state.
Siam is the son of Syed Abed Ali Jibon, a former driver for the former chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), who came under scrutiny in connection with a question-paper leak scandal. ACC Public Prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi confirmed the verdict to the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
ACC Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain filed the case against Siam on January 5 last year over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income. The case alleged that Siam acquired illegal assets worth Tk 3.73 million between September 3, 2021, and June 30, 2024.
Following the investigation, Zakir Hossain submitted the charge sheet to the court on December 30 of the same year. The charge sheet identified movable and immovable assets worth Tk 3.181 million that were allegedly inconsistent with Siam’s known sources of income.
On June 17, the same court ordered the trial to begin after framing charges against Siam. During the trial, 11 witnesses testified before the court.
