Baul maestro Fakir Lalon Sai devoted his life and songs to humanity, rising above divisions of religion, caste, community and ethnicity. His messages of human love, secularism and equality remain relevant to countless people in Bangladesh and beyond. Devotees and spiritual practitioners have gathered at his shrine in Chheuriya, Kumarkhali, Kushtia, to mark his 136th death anniversary.

The three-day festival began on Saturday, October 17, and is scheduled to conclude on Monday night, October 19.

Organised by the Lalon Academy with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Kushtia district administration, the event has drawn Baul practitioners, Lalon devotees and visitors from different parts of the country. Final preparations have been underway, with the shrine grounds decorated for the occasion.

Inspired by Lalon’s spiritual message, “Where the abode of Sai stands,” the annual gathering brings together followers to commemorate the mystic’s life and philosophy. Since Lalon’s death in 1890, his devotees have gathered at the Chheuriya shrine to observe the anniversary through spiritual gatherings, discussions and performances of his mystical songs.

Discussion sessions will be held every evening on the shrine’s main stage throughout the festival. Performers will also present songs reflecting Lalon’s humanist philosophy and spiritual beliefs. One of the event’s key aims is to introduce his ideas of humanity, equality and religious harmony to younger generations.

Rural Fair Along the Kaliganga River
A large rural fair has also been set up along the Kaliganga River, which flows beside the shrine. Traders are displaying a variety of goods, while the fair has generated excitement among local businesses. The arrival of Baul practitioners and devotees has added to the festive atmosphere around the shrine.

Preparations for Safety and Security
The authorities have placed particular emphasis on overall management and security to ensure the festival runs smoothly. The district administration says arrangements have been made to help visitors from home and abroad attend safely.

Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Touhid Bin-Hasan said preparations had been completed for the anniversary celebrations. He added that the authorities had coordinated with relevant stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, safe and orderly event.

The annual gathering celebrates Lalon Sai’s enduring humanist outlook and inclusive philosophy. Once again, the historic shrine in Chheuriya is becoming a meeting place for Baul practitioners, devotees and visitors united by his message of humanity beyond religious and social divisions.
