A Houthi commander has been killed in clashes with government forces near Taiz, a city in southwestern Yemen, according to a Yemeni official.
Fayad al-Numan, a spokesperson for Yemen’s media, announced the death in a post on social media platform X on Friday, October 16. He said Abdul Rahman Mohammed Sufyan Wajih al-Din, also known as Abu al-Qarar, was killed by government troops near Mount Han.
Al-Numan identified the slain Houthi commander as a brigadier general and the director of Dhi al-Sufal district in Ibb province.
However, he did not specify when the incident occurred or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the commander’s death. The Houthis had not issued an immediate comment.
Taiz has long been a key battleground in Yemen’s conflict, with government forces and Houthi fighters repeatedly clashing in areas surrounding the city.
The conflict began in 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several other provinces. The following year, a Saudi-led coalition intervened militarily in support of Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The prolonged conflict has contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis in the country.
