The Border Security Force (BSF) of India has returned two Bangladeshi police officers who accidentally crossed into Indian territory while chasing suspected drug smugglers, officials said.
The officers were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan of Brahmanpara Police Station. They were handed over to Bangladesh during a flag meeting near main border pillar No. 2057 in the Narayanpur border area of Brahmanpara upazila, Cumilla.
Mohammad Shahin, assistant superintendent of police for the Debidwar-Brahmanpara circle, confirmed the development.
Brahmanpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Faruk Hossain said the two officers were on night duty in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw at around 10:30 pm on Thursday. They were heading to an anti-drug operation near border pillar No. 2059 in the Asha Bari area of Shashidal Union.
When suspected drug traders tried to flee after spotting the police, the officers chased them and accidentally crossed the international border into India. According to information provided by the authorities, Indian drug smugglers subsequently detained the officers, assaulted them and handed them over to the BSF.
Cumilla BGB Sector Commander Colonel Rakibul Hasan said the officers had entered India inadvertently while performing their duties. The BGB began communicating with the BSF after learning of the incident.
The flag meeting was attended by Lieutenant Colonel S. M. Shariful Islam, an official associated with the Shashidal Border Outpost of the Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB); ASP Mohammad Shahin; Brahmanpara police chief Mohammad Faruk Hossain; and Shashidal BOP commander Subedar Mohammad Takbir Hossain.
The two police officers were subsequently handed over to Bangladesh through the flag meeting.
