Cultural Affairs Adviser Nitai Roy Chowdhury has said that Bangladesh is a country rich in cultural diversity and that its heritage is a source of national pride. He emphasized that libraries play an indispensable role in building a knowledge-based society.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a four-day training workshop titled “Knowledge and Skills Development for Librarians and Representatives of Private Libraries (Batch-64)” organized by the National Book Centre at its auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.
Addressing librarians, the adviser described them as “missionaries of society” who spread the light of knowledge among people. He also suggested that libraries should not remain confined within closed spaces but should have transparent glass walls so that people can see readers inside and feel inspired to read.
Highlighting the importance of reading in preventing drug abuse, he said that promoting arts and cultural activities can help protect young people from the growing threat of narcotics. He urged the promotion of a reading culture that includes life-oriented and educational books beyond textbooks.
Cultural Affairs Secretary and Chairman of the National Book Centre Board of Directors Kaniz Mowla attended the event as a special guest, while Director of the National Book Centre AHM Sakhawat Ullah presided over the programme.
In her remarks, the secretary emphasized that every library should have a dedicated corner for children so they can engage with books in an enjoyable environment.
The welcome address was delivered by National Book Centre Librarian and Deputy Director Md Farid Uddin Sarker.
A total of 32 librarians from different districts across the country are participating in the 64th batch of the training programme.
