The government has proposed an allocation of Tk 573.01 billion for the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education in the 2026–27 fiscal year budget, aiming to transform Bangladesh into a skills-based economy and create a workforce equipped for future employment opportunities.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the proposal while presenting the national budget in Parliament on Thursday.
The proposed allocation marks a significant increase from the revised allocation of Tk 417.54 billion in the 2025–26 fiscal year.
Overall, the government has proposed a record Tk 1.366 trillion allocation for the education sector, making it the second-highest priority sector in the national budget.
Of the proposed Tk 573.01 billion for secondary and higher education, Tk 328.67 billion has been earmarked for operational expenditures, while Tk 244.34 billion will be spent on development activities.
To modernize education and strengthen digital learning, the budget includes plans to establish 25,000 new multimedia classrooms at the secondary level. In addition, 100 schools will receive blended learning laboratories, along with the recruitment of laboratory supervisors.
As part of the new curriculum, a comprehensive framework for mandatory third-language education alongside Bangla and English will be developed. The initiative includes creating five language-training modules, a national resource pool, and establishing 500 modern language laboratories across the country.
The budget also places significant emphasis on educational infrastructure. Plans include constructing 4,000 new school buildings and establishing 500 new educational institutions in underserved and disadvantaged areas.
To improve student welfare and sanitation, the government has proposed the construction of 1,485 toilets and the installation of 1,000 vending machines in educational institutions.
Furthermore, under ongoing development projects, 218 academic buildings, 21 administrative buildings, 38 multipurpose buildings, and 60 residential halls at secondary and higher secondary institutions will be handed over to the relevant authorities.
The government expects these initiatives to enhance technological literacy, improve educational quality, and prepare students to compete effectively in the global knowledge-based economy.
