UNESCO has expressed interest in launching a new project aimed at protecting the social and mental well-being of university students in Bangladesh. The proposal was discussed during a courtesy meeting held on Tuesday with the Chairman of the UGC, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed.

A five-member UNESCO delegation led by Dr. Susan Vise attended the meeting. Other members included Education Head Norihide Furukawa from the UNESCO Dhaka office, Dr. Richa Bansal from MGIEP, Associate Professor Syed Tanvir Rahman from Dhaka University, and Programme Officer Raju Das.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed the UGC Chairman on ongoing initiatives supporting students’ mental health following the mass movement in August 2024. They also expressed interest in expanding the project based on previous success.

UGC Chairman Professor Mamun Ahmed welcomed the initiative, noting that university students face significant mental pressure due to various socio-economic factors. He stressed that without addressing these root causes, a supportive academic environment cannot be ensured.

He further highlighted that nearly 80% of university students come from rural backgrounds, and many struggle to adapt to new academic and social environments, leading to stress and anxiety. He emphasized the importance of mental health support along with soft skills development.

Both sides agreed to form a joint working committee to design and implement the proposed project.

Previously, a joint initiative by UNESCO and UGC provided direct mental health support to around 10,000 students across 22 universities, with an additional 20,000 students reached through digital platforms.
