Indian Government Launches Pilot Project to Buy Cow Urine at Up to ₹20 per Liter

The Indian government has launched a pilot initiative to collect cow urine, with plans to pay farmers up to ₹20 per litre in the future. The project has initially been introduced in 15 villages in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to a report by Indian media outlet NDTV, around 500 litres of cow urine are currently being collected every day under the pilot programme. Rural women involved in the collection process are reportedly being paid a commission of ₹2 per litre.

The government led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath says the initiative is aimed at creating additional income opportunities for farmers and rural women.

Authorities also believe the programme could encourage better care of cows that have stopped producing milk by creating an additional economic value around them.

However, the initiative has drawn criticism from the opposition Samajwadi Party, which has described the project as a “scam” and questioned its rationale.

The programme is currently being implemented on a trial basis in 15 villages in Bulandshahr. If the pilot is considered successful, the government plans to expand the initiative to other areas.
