51st Death Anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Today

DHAKA, August 15, 2026: The 51st death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being observed today, Saturday. He was assassinated along with most members of his family on August 15, 1975, in an attack on his residence at Dhanmondi Road 32 in Dhaka.
Bangabandhu’s wife, Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, his three sons—Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel—and his daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal were also killed in the attack.
His only brother, Sheikh Abu Naser; military secretary Colonel Jamil Uddin Ahmed; Special Branch officer Siddiqur Rahman; and army personnel Syed Mahbubul Haque were also killed.
On the same day, attackers raided the residence of Bangabandhu’s nephew and Awami Jubo League leader Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni. Moni and his pregnant wife, Arzu Moni, were killed in the attack.
An attack was also carried out at the residence of Bangabandhu’s brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat. His daughter Baby, son Arif Serniabat, grandson Sukanta Babu, nephew Sajib Serniabat and a relative named Abdul Naim Khan were among those killed.
Bangabandhu’s two daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, survived the massacre as they were in Brussels, Belgium, at the time.
The Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina had observed August 15 as National Mourning Day and declared the day a public holiday.
However, after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and left Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising, the interim government cancelled the public holiday on August 15. The decision remains in effect.
Born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara, Gopalganj, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman played a central role in Bangladesh’s independence movement. Following the Liberation War in 1971, he served as the country’s first president and later as prime minister.
