Popular Indian YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released by police late on Saturday night after being detained earlier that morning at his residence in Gurugram, Haryana, according to reports citing the Press Trust of India (PTI).
Rathee had travelled to India to participate in a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration was organised over allegations of irregularities in voter lists and concerns about the transparency of the electoral process.
According to reports, around 30 police personnel in plain clothes arrived at Rathee’s residence in the Kendriya Vihar area of Sector 56, Gurugram, at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. He was taken to the Crime Branch office in Sector 39 and was released later that night.
Police said he was detained amid concerns that he might participate in a protest without permission and disregard administrative warnings. A police official also said Rathee had been warned not to attend the event because restrictions under Section 163 of India’s Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police carried out a major crackdown during opposition protests over alleged irregularities in voter lists and the electoral process. Media reports said a large number of people, including opposition party leaders and activists, were detained. Reports have cited differing figures for the total number of detainees.
Rathee’s detention and subsequent release have drawn renewed attention amid the wider political debate over electoral transparency in India.
