India’s Supreme Court has identified 14 defects in a petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition alliance leaders over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged electoral irregularities. The petition will not be listed for a hearing until the defects are corrected.
NDTV reported the development on Tuesday, October 13.
The identified defects include a shortfall of 220 rupees in court fees and missing vakalatnamas—authorisations for legal representation—for nine petitioners. Other issues include unclear photocopies of identity documents, documents printed in small fonts, missing colour copies, inconsistent page numbering and regional-language documents submitted without English translations.
The petition, listed under the title Rahul Gandhi vs. Election Commission of India, has been signed by Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Supriya Sule and several other opposition alliance leaders.
The petition seeks the disclosure of documents related to the SIR process, judicial scrutiny of the constitutional validity of the Election Commission’s decisions and an independent audit of the entire exercise.
Meanwhile, opposition activists and leaders marched in Delhi on Monday, demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. They also attempted to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice Surya Kant, but he did not meet them, citing the matter’s status as sub judice.
