At least five people have been killed and 30 others injured after a passenger train derailed in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province. The accident occurred early Tuesday, October 13, near the Sher Shah Bridge on the outskirts of Multan.

According to Geo News, all 14 coaches of the Rehman Baba Express, travelling from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed. Rescue teams reached the scene and transported the injured to Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

Officials said 13 coaches had been removed, while rescue operations were continuing at the remaining coach.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the accident and directed the relevant authorities to complete rescue operations quickly and ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured.

A passenger claimed that railway workers had repaired nuts and bolts on the train’s ninth coach near Rohri before the accident. However, authorities have yet to establish the exact cause of the derailment.

Pakistan has experienced several deadly railway accidents in the past. In August 2023, at least 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured when the Hazara Express derailed near Nawabshah in the southern province of Sindh.
