India’s Gen Z Movement Drew Inspiration From Bangladesh: Neha Bora

The Gen Z movement spreading across India has largely drawn inspiration from Bangladesh’s student-led movement, said Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA).
Bora made the remarks in a solidarity message published on the Socialist Student Front’s Facebook page shortly after midnight on Tuesday, October 13, marking the organisation’s sixth national conference.
“We know that the Gen Z movement we are witnessing across this country (India) originated in Bangladesh,” Bora said.
Addressing young people in Bangladesh, she said Indian Gen Z activists and young people were engaged in a struggle similar to the fight against religious fundamentalism being waged by young people in Bangladesh.
Drawing comparisons between universities in India and Bangladesh, Bora also expressed concern over what she described as growing threats to universities in Bangladesh. While opposing the saffronisation of India’s education system, she warned that critical thinking and the expression of dissent were also facing constraints in Bangladesh.
Expressing solidarity with Bangladeshi students, Bora called for greater cooperation among young people across South Asia. She stressed the importance of collective efforts to build a better future for the region.
Bora also extended her greetings to the Socialist Student Front on its sixth national conference and praised Bangladeshi students for inspiring young people protesting against the Modi government.
She has emerged as a prominent figure in India’s Gen Z-led protest movement. A video showing a confrontation between her and police during a demonstration went viral on social media, bringing her into the national spotlight.
A theatre artist and social activist, Bora has been active in protests against the Modi government. Her activism reflects growing student concerns over electoral reforms, academic freedom and the treatment of dissenting voices.
