Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals after a court convicted them of committing what authorities described as an “immoral act” inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah. The executions were carried out in the Makkah region on October 14, according to the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
The two individuals were identified as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, both Bangladeshi nationals, according to the ministry’s statement.
The statement said security authorities apprehended the pair and launched an investigation. Formal charges were subsequently brought against them, and the case was referred to the competent court. The court found them guilty and sentenced them to death.
According to Saudi authorities, the court considered the seriousness of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the holy place and time when imposing the sentences. The verdict was upheld by the relevant authorities, after which a royal order was issued to carry out the executions.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law. It also warned that individuals who violate the sanctity of mosques or engage in similar acts would face legal consequences.
