US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to accept the outcome of the country’s midterm elections, whatever the results may be. He made the remarks in an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday (November 3) night, local time.
“I am certainly ready to accept the results of the election,” Trump said. Expressing his willingness to work with Democrats, he added, “We will work with the Democrats. I look forward to working with them. Hopefully, we can reach some kind of agreement.”
The United States held its midterm elections on Tuesday. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate were contested. Gubernatorial elections were also held in 36 states.
According to the latest figures reported by CNN and other international media outlets, the Democratic Party was leading in the House of Representatives race. A total of 140 Democratic candidates had won, while the party was leading in another 97 seats. Meanwhile, 94 Republican candidates had secured victories, with the party leading in 70 additional seats.
A party needs to win at least 218 seats to secure control of the House of Representatives.
Democrats were also ahead in the results for the Senate, the upper chamber of Congress. So far, 49 Democratic candidates had won, compared with 38 Republicans. In addition, three Democratic candidates and seven Republican candidates were leading in their respective races. The result for one Senate seat had yet to be announced.
Alongside his pledge to accept the election outcome, Trump also expressed interest in reaching agreements with Democrats and working with them.
