The opposition Democratic Party has taken control of both chambers of the US Congress—the Senate and the House of Representatives—after defeating the ruling Republicans in the November 3 midterm elections. The result marks a major political setback for President Donald Trump and has triggered reactions and debate around the world.

Political analysts say voter dissatisfaction over the Trump administration's policies, the war with Iran, rising energy prices and the cost of living played significant roles in the outcome. Many observers see the result as a major public rebuke of Trump's leadership and Republican governance.

Obama and European Leaders React

Former US President Barack Obama welcomed the Democrats' victory, saying voters had sent a clear message in favour of unity over division and practical solutions.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on social media that Americans had voted against policies that impoverish people, spread hatred and protect the privileges of elites.

Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, described the result as a major blow to Trump and his policies and a significant victory for American democracy. However, he warned that a weakened Trump could become more aggressive and unpredictable.

Jordan Bardella, leader of France's National Rally party, said US military intervention in Iran had consequences not only for the American economy but also for Europe. He pointed to rising oil prices and their impact on the purchasing power of European citizens.

Iran's Reaction

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described the election outcome as a reflection of public opposition to war. In a social media post, he said that whether out of conscience or concern over the cost of living, Americans had said “no to war.”

He also warned that if the US government betrayed the will of its people to serve international financial backers and pressure groups, the consequences could be severe.

Russia's Position

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the election results would not change Moscow's foreign policy. He noted that the Democratic Party leadership had consistently maintained a sharply negative approach towards Russia.

Ryabkov added that Russia would continue to follow its established policy on Ukraine and other foreign affairs, regardless of political changes in other countries.

Reactions from Japan and Taiwan

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the Japan-US alliance would remain the cornerstone of Japan's foreign and security policy, regardless of the election outcome. He stressed the importance of strong cooperation between the two countries amid growing international uncertainty.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, expressed hope that bipartisan support for Taiwan in the US Congress and the executive branch would continue.

Political Challenges Ahead for Trump

Analysts believe Democratic control of both chambers of Congress could make the remaining two years of Trump's presidency politically difficult. Disputes are expected to intensify over legislation, government appointments, investigations and budget matters. Political deadlock could also emerge over impeachment efforts and presidential vetoes.

However, despite the Democrats' congressional majority, the president will retain significant executive authority over foreign policy and military decisions. The international community will therefore be watching closely to see how Washington's positions evolve on the Iran war, the Ukraine crisis and international trade.
