Democrat Paige Cognetti Reclaims Key Pennsylvania Congressional Seat

Democratic candidate Paige Cognetti has defeated Republican incumbent Congressman Rob Bresnahan in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. midterm elections. Cognetti, the mayor of Scranton, has returned the seat to Democratic control.
On Wednesday (November 4), CNN’s Decision Desk projected Cognetti as the winner in the closely contested district.
Republican candidate Rob Bresnahan had won the seat from the Democrats in the 2024 election. Two years later, Cognetti defeated him to restore the district to Democratic hands.
The victory gives the Democratic Party back one of the key seats in Pennsylvania that it had targeted for recovery from Republican control.
During her campaign, Cognetti presented herself as an alternative to conventional, self-serving politics. She pledged to introduce detailed audits to ensure transparency in the activities and finances of elected representatives if she won the election. The Scranton mayor sought to build voter confidence through this commitment.
Reclaiming the seat from the Republicans represents not only a personal victory for Cognetti but also a significant success for the Democratic Party’s electoral strategy in Pennsylvania.
