The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its candidate for the country’s presidential election.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee on Thursday, where Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman proposed Fakhrul’s name. The proposal was unanimously approved by the committee before the party formally announced his candidacy.

At 78, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is one of Bangladesh’s most experienced political figures. He began his professional career as an economics teacher before entering mainstream politics and gradually rising through the BNP’s organisational hierarchy.

Fakhrul studied economics at the University of Dhaka and later joined the teaching profession. He served at several government colleges and spent a significant period teaching economics at Thakurgaon Government College.

His political involvement began during his student years. He was active in student politics during the 1969 mass uprising and later entered local politics, eventually becoming chairman of Thakurgaon municipality.

Fakhrul subsequently joined the BNP and rose through several senior positions. He became the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General in 2009, Acting Secretary General in 2011 and Secretary General in 2016. Following the 2026 general election, he also served as Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

Throughout several difficult periods in the BNP’s political history, Fakhrul played an important organisational role, particularly during the party’s long period in opposition and its various political movements.

Fakhrul has also been regarded by many observers as a relatively restrained and courteous political communicator. Although his political positions have often been contested by opponents, he has repeatedly spoken in favour of political dialogue, democratic processes and tolerance.

The BNP’s decision to nominate him for the presidency has generated considerable political discussion, particularly over his long experience in politics and public life. Party leaders have highlighted his experience and political maturity as important qualities for the constitutional position of head of state.

The presidential election is scheduled to take place on August 20. Given the BNP and its allies’ parliamentary majority, reports indicate that Fakhrul is strongly positioned to win the election.

Following his nomination, Fakhrul resigned as BNP Secretary General as part of the presidential election process. His resignation from the party position marks an important transition from active partisan politics toward a potential constitutional role.

If elected president, Fakhrul will move from the centre of party politics to the constitutional office of head of state. One of the key expectations from him would therefore be to rise above partisan politics and represent all citizens while carrying out his constitutional responsibilities.

The presidency is one of Bangladesh’s most important constitutional and ceremonial offices. The next president will be expected to uphold the Constitution, protect the dignity of state institutions, maintain political balance and contribute to national unity.

Fakhrul’s extensive political experience, background in teaching and local government, and long service in the BNP’s top leadership have made his nomination one of the most significant developments in Bangladesh’s current political landscape.

The August 20 presidential election will determine whether Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir becomes Bangladesh’s next president.
