Ireland to Wear Black Armbands in Israel Match in Memory of Gaza Victims

Ireland will wear black armbands in memory of those killed in Gaza when they face Israel in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday night. The decision to proceed with the match followed lengthy discussions and a squad vote in which a significant majority supported playing.

The match is scheduled to take place in Debrecen, Hungary. The fixture had been surrounded by controversy, with calls from various groups for Ireland’s players to withdraw in protest over the Gaza conflict.

On Saturday, the players held discussions lasting around four hours. The scheduled training session and pre-match press conference were delayed.

At the later press conference, Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell said a significant majority of players had voted in favour of fulfilling the fixture. One player, however, expressed discomfort about playing and decided to withdraw from the squad.

Courell said the Irish players would wear black armbands in recognition of lives lost in Gaza. The team is also planning other symbolic measures around the two fixtures.

The first match, officially Israel’s home fixture, will be played in Hungary. Ireland’s home match against Israel on October 4 has been moved to Bačka Topola, Serbia, and is scheduled to take place behind closed doors.
