Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called an emergency press conference over alleged harassment of expatriate Bangladeshis at the airport and the case and arrest of freedom fighter and former lawmaker Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman.

The press conference is scheduled to be held at 5pm on Sunday (October 4) at the party’s central office. Central leaders of Jamaat are expected to speak at the event.

In an invitation sent to the media, the party said the press conference was being organised to protest what it described as harassment of expatriates at the airport and the filing of a “false and conspiratorial case” against Akhtaruzzaman, followed by his arrest.

Jamaat is expected to present its position on the allegations concerning the treatment of expatriate passengers and the legal case against Akhtaruzzaman during the briefing.

The invitation was signed by Ahsanul Mahbub Zubair, assistant secretary-general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and secretary of the party’s Central Publicity and Media Department.

Akhtaruzzaman was earlier arrested and shown arrested in a case filed following an incident at the airport. The case includes allegations of obstructing official duties and misconduct with officials. Legal proceedings over the allegations are ongoing.
