Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said ensuring quality and affordable housing for low-income people is one of the government’s key commitments. He also said the government has taken initiatives to reduce pressure on major cities through planned urbanisation.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting marking World Habitat Day 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Monday, October 5.

The Prime Minister said master plans are being prepared for all districts as part of efforts to promote planned urban development. The initiative is intended to support long-term planning for housing, civic facilities and urban management.

Tarique Rahman said separate urban development authorities are being planned for Sylhet, Mymensingh, Barishal, Cumilla, Rangpur and Narayanganj to strengthen the institutional foundation for planned urbanisation.

According to the Prime Minister, these initiatives will contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

He said the government’s priorities include building safe, inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable cities while ensuring adequate, safe and affordable housing for every citizen.

Before attending the World Habitat Day programme, the Prime Minister planted a Sonchampa sapling on the premises of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Suman, State Minister Ahmmed Sohel Manjur, ministry secretary Md Obaidur Rahman and other senior officials were present at the event.
