Lionel Messi is set to play his final match for Argentina on Tuesday (October 6), when the Albiceleste face Benin in a special friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The match will mark the end of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s international career after more than two decades.

The 39-year-old forward joined Argentina’s squad at the Ezeiza training centre on Sunday (October 4), reuniting with his teammates ahead of the farewell occasion. Argentina enter the match in strong form after defeating Bolivia 4-0 and Burkina Faso 7-0 in their previous friendlies.

The Argentine Football Association has planned the Benin match as a special tribute to Messi. AFA president Claudio Tapia said the decision was made to give the national-team icon and captain the farewell he deserves on home soil. The match at the Monumental is expected to be played in front of around 85,000 spectators.

Messi currently holds Argentina’s records for appearances and goals, with 207 caps and 125 goals. If he plays against Benin, he will make his 208th and final appearance for the national team. His international honours include the 2022 World Cup and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

Several of Messi’s long-time teammates are expected to be part of the farewell occasion. However, 2022 World Cup winners Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina will reportedly miss the event. Leandro Paredes is also expected to be present in the stands to support the Argentine captain.

A special jersey has also been prepared for Messi’s farewell. The commemorative design centres on his iconic No. 10 shirt, adding another symbolic touch to an already historic night.

After more than 20 years representing Argentina, Messi is now preparing to close one of the most celebrated chapters in international football. Tuesday’s match against Benin will provide the final stage for his farewell in front of the home supporters.
