Shakawath Hossain Receives Copyright for ‘Six Control Points’ Food Cost Framework

Md. Shakawath Hossain, chief executive officer (CEO) of Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC, has received copyright registration for his intellectual property-based framework, “Shakawath’s Six Control Points for Food Cost Optimization.”

Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC is the owner of The Westin Dhaka, Sheraton Dhaka, and HANSA – A Premium Residence. The work has been registered with the Copyright Office of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Developed from more than 25 years of experience in hospitality operations, the framework presents a practical and measurable approach to managing and optimising food costs.

It focuses on six key areas: Purchase Control, Inventory Control, Right Transfer, Portion Control, Appropriate Cooking and Wastage Control.

The framework brings together Purchasing, Receiving, Stores, Cost Control, Finance, Culinary and Food and Beverage Service departments under an integrated system.

Implemented across three hotels
The Six Control Points framework has been implemented at The Westin Dhaka, Sheraton Dhaka and HANSA – A Premium Residence since 2023.

According to information provided by the organisation, the initiative has increased awareness of food costs and contributed to combined food cost savings of approximately BDT 20 million across the three hotels.

The leadership teams, departmental heads, and relevant team members of the three hotels were actively involved in implementing the framework, contributing to measurable improvements in food cost control and savings, according to the organisation.

Included in university curriculum
The Six Control Points framework has also been incorporated into the academic curriculum of the Tourism & Hospitality Management Department of the University of Dhaka.

Plans are also progressing to introduce the framework across other academic and professional training platforms, with the aim of helping future hospitality professionals develop practical knowledge of food cost management and sustainable operational practices.

Supporting sustainable management
Beyond cost reduction, the framework is designed to support sustainable management practices. It encourages hotels to purchase according to actual demand, manage inventory efficiently, maintain appropriate portion sizes, follow suitable cooking methods and reduce food waste.

According to the organisation, the approach can help maintain food quality, service standards and guest satisfaction while contributing to long-term cost efficiency.

‘Working to expand it nationwide’
Commenting on the copyright recognition, Md. Shakawath Hossain said, “This copyright recognition is an important milestone for the Six Control Points initiative. We are now working to expand it across the hospitality sector in Bangladesh. At the same time, we are working to align the framework with international hotel brands, creating potential for its implementation globally in the future.”

The copyright registration formally recognises the innovation behind Six Control Points for Food Cost Optimization as the original work of Md. Shakawath Hossain and provides a stronger foundation for its wider application across the hospitality and education sectors.
